“Travel and adventure, leaves you speechless and then turns you into a story teller”.
ABOUT VIOLA & YASMINE ADVENTURES
Viola and Yasmine Adventures (www.violayasmineadventures.com) is a Kenyan travel and adventures blog. We are two friends (Viola and Yasmine) who met through social media and were brought together by the common interests we had. With the need to put faces to our names, we met at a barbecue event and the connection we had was glorious. We needed to meet up more often and instead of doing the ordinary meet up at restaurants, like most people would settle to do, I set a date at the Kenya International Conference Center (KICC) and later Uhuru Park, because these were sites I had always wanted to visit.
My view of the KICC, like most of us was that it was an official area and not open to the public. I was amazed when I realized the place had beautiful fountains, the Jomo Kenyatta monument and most importantly the scenic view of the city that the helipad has to offer. One can take pictures of the environ and or have a picnic at the rooftop of the KICC.
As for Uhuru Park, I had stumbled upon a piece by the sensational Kenyan fashion blogger, Sharon Mundia. It utterly captured my attention. I realized that Uhuru Park is a beautiful scenery that has been shadowed by a lot of stereotypes. The park offers a wide range of fun and exciting activities such as boat riding, camel riding and a picnic with friends and family. The recreation park features a variety of natural play areas and national monuments. It is a site to behold. Visiting these two sites with Yasmine, shed the light that fear makes strangers of people who should become friends.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
We met successively over sites around Nairobi: The Bomas of Kenya, where we experienced the richness of Kenya’s culture and the Giraffe Center, where we learnt a lot about the animal and appreciated our wildlife, among other places. Getting to see the giraffe up close, clothed in such beauty and grace and feeding it was impeccable.
We began by posting our pictures and videos of our little but thrilling adventures on our social media accounts. The response was overwhelming as we had many people inquiring of these places. Many were shocked of their existence and the cost of the activities. In a snap, it came to my mind to come up with a platform to address these questions. I did extensive research on Kenyan travel and adventures blogs and figured that not many people were in this field in Kenya. Most of them were international bloggers. I also figured that most of us liked to hang out in restaurants. The scarcity of a Kenyan travel and adventures blog sparked my interest and has been a source of motivation ever since.
I sold the idea to Yasmine, who had now become my adventures partner. She shared the same sentiments and ever since we have been striving to make this platform a home for family, spouses, friends and tourists who desire to rave the country. An activity that began as a hobby turned us into story tellers with an aim now to improve our domestic tourism and in the years to come, international tourism. Hence our theme: APPRECIATING KENYA.
One question to ask would be why travel all the way to see The Burj Khalifa when you haven’t even been to The KICC or save to go see a Kangaroo in Australia and you have not seen the wildebeest migration at the Mara. Yes, Burj Khalifa is the world’s tallest building and perhaps maybe far much more interesting than the KICC but why not start by promoting the tourism industry in Kenya before focusing on other countries?
We acknowledge the fact that maybe enough has not been done by the tourism industry in Kenya to promote domestic tourism. Most focus goes into promoting international tourism and maybe that is why most Kenyans do not have any ideas or perhaps many ideas on amazing places to visit right here in Kenya. We will use violayasmineadventurs.com to regulate imagination with reality and instead of thinking how things may be, seem as they are!
The highlight of the website is the fact that our posts are detailed enough to provide people with numerous destinations far from normal which are fun and interesting in Kenya for friends, spouse or family to visit, hold birthdays, picnics, explore together on top of many other things you could possibly do.
The journey through building our adventure has had its ups and downs. We have taken a long break before to make adjustments to the blog. We have a new look. The downside of this probably was slowing down our activities and keeping our ardent readers on the wait for a long time. Besides this, our biggest challenge is geared towards finances. We have places we would love to transverse and show Kenya plus the world alike the beauty that lies within our country but are limited financially. To counter this, we would like to reach out to people who own different places around the country. We would like use our blog to advertise and extensively reach out to as many people as possible, domestically and internationally. It has also not been easy for us in figuring our next destination especially because we rarely do the same thing twice when we are together, yet there are lot of places whose potential need to be unleashed. We not only want to visit places in Nairobi, which has been our focus in the past year due to circumstances such as balancing school work and finding time to keep up with activities, but also different counties within the country. We know that Kenya has a lot to offer from sceneries all the way to culture and tradition.
WHY DO WE STILL DO IT?
Above all, our passion for travel and adventure helps us conquer all our downsides. We draw a lot of happiness and strength from the fulfillment and support we get from friends and family. Besides the thrill, there is so much to learn about places, wildlife and service, just to name but a few. We believe that a mind that is stretched by new experiences can never go back to its old dimension. We will use our platform to share in this, alongside helping the tourism industry which has proven to be one of the backbones to our economy. For many, we hope to transform the world from one of monotony and drabness to one of excitement and adventure.
